Early Years Foundation Stage

Knowledge Organisers - EYFS - 2024/2025

Knowledge Organisers - EYFS - 2023-2024

Welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage page (Reception & Nursery)

The Early Years Foundation Stage is most children's first experience of school. We use Development Matters to plan a 2-year cycle of learning for our children, which supports the development of Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language, Physical Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design. We have devised a skills driven curriculum that can be adapted to the different interests of our children.

We balance learning through the use of Areas of Provision such as the construction area, workshop and role-play with whole group, small group and one to one teaching. The areas of provision allow children the opportunity to engage in open-ended challenges through The Curiosity Approach, which in turn develop and strengthen their understanding of concepts in all of the areas of learning. We use a mixture of teaching activities to support all of our children in the different stages of their educational journey. We regularly reflect on the children’s next steps in learning and put into place opportunities for children to succeed.

We have been involved in the Early Talk for York project since it began in 2019. The project works on increasing children’s language, developing their vocabulary and supporting families who may need speech and language support. We use many strategies to develop the language skills of our children, including links to Speech and Language therapists and activities in our language hub. We are committed to making children confident communicators.

We have selected Little Wandle Letters and Sounds as our phonics scheme and children engage in daily whole class sessions to support the development of phonics skills for reading and writing. Alongside this we use Collins Big Cat reading resources.

In the autumn term this academic year, we will engage in the following topics; All about me, Autumn and Festivals. We have enjoyed a range of activities to develop skills, which are supported by these topics as well as developing a love of learning and teamwork through performance of rhymes and stories.

Throughout the year we will investigate different animals and the habitats in which they live as well as minibeasts and human growth. In summer, we will move on to travel and the wider world as well as our aspirations for the future. Although we carefully plan the skills content of our curriculum, we ensure we can adapt our topics to follow the interest of the children.

We regularly invite families into school to engage in Family Learning sessions. In autumn term we will be inviting parents in for a story time and Marvellous Me updates, look out for the invitation. We will also send out regular invitations throughout the year for maths, phonics and reading workshops, if you have any suggestions please let us know.
