Dear Parent and Carers

As part of the UPKS2 science curriculum, ‘Living things and their habitats’, the Year 5 & 6 children learn about the changes experienced in puberty and how to describe the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals. As a school, we are committed to providing all children with a planned ‘Relationships and Sex education’ (RSE) programme. This part of the curriculum became statutory in all primary schools from September 2020. The aim is to ensure pupils learn about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, healthy relationships and keeping themselves safe.

Next week, the children will learn about all the male and female body parts and the ways in which boys and girls grow and develop in puberty both physically and emotionally. Year 6 pupils will further develop their understanding of the physical and emotional changes they go through at puberty and about human reproduction.

Changing adolescent body:

  • Key facts about puberty and the changing adolescent body, particularly from age 9 through to age 11, including physical and emotional changes
  • About menstrual wellbeing including the key facts about the menstrual cycle
  • Sanitary protection and support are available to them at all times in school
  • Personal hygiene

The sessions will be delivered by the class teachers throughout the week. This will be taught over a period of a few sessions. Girls and boys will be taught separately.

Teaching staff approach this aspect of the curriculum very sensitively and are aware of how it contributes to pupils’ development. This includes supporting them to develop healthy relationships, keep themselves safe and having factually correct information and the skills to positively manage the physical and emotional changes that will happen as they grow into happy, confident and responsible teenagers.

If you have any questions about your child taking part in these sessions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.

Thank you for all your support,

Year 5 and 6 Team
