In phonics, we use the Letters and Sounds programme along with the Jolly Phonics actions for each letter. In Nursery this involves playing with sounds, rhythm and rhyme and breaking words down into the sounds, for example c-a-t and sh-i-p.

In Reception, we use the Letters and Sounds programme to determine the order in which we teach the letters as well as the correct sounds  and terminology - for example, grapheme (letter), digraph(two letters making one sound) and tricky words(words that need to be sight read, not blended). The Jolly Phonics supports children's multi-sensory needs by giving an action to each sound as we learn it. This gives the children the skill to link movement and sound which helps transfer the learning into their long term memory. This cements the knowledge which is the foundation of reading and writing.
