Dear parents and carers

In summer term, all children in year 1 will be taking part in the Phonics Screening Check. This is a statutory reading assessment, designed to assess whether individual children have learnt phonic decoding and blending skills to a nationally agreed standard.

 What does the check involve?

The check is administered in the form of a booklet containing 40 words – 20 real and 20 pseudo words (alien words). Each child will sit one-to-one with their teacher and read the words aloud. It usually takes 5 – 10 minutes to complete. However, there is no time limit and children can take as long as they need. The children have worked on similar activities in their phonics lessons and are familiar with the format of the check.

 What is a pseudo/alien word?

The pseudo words are presented with a picture of an alien. We refer to them as alien words. These are included because they allow the teacher to be sure that children can accurately decode unfamiliar words and are not just reading from memory.

We will be hosting an information session for parents and carers on Wednesday 17th April at 2:30pm. We will provide you with more information about the check, how to support your child at home and be available to answer any questions you may have. Please enter school through door P (to the right of the main reception).

Thank you for your continued support,

Mr Ibbott and Miss Holmes
