It’s been great to see the children back and hear of their Easter adventures. We’ve hit the ground running, diving headfirst into our new topics, with plenty of hands-on learning through our Immersion Days.
In Early Years, the children have loved beginning their new topic about farm animals. They have shown great excitement in learning about different animals, where they live on the farm and the sounds they make. In the coming weeks, the children will learn about animals and their young and explore where milk and eggs come from.
Year 1 and 2 had a fantastic time beginning their new topic ‘Into the Amazon.’ - looking at the different animals that they could find in the Amazon rainforest and drawing their own Toucans. They shared the story of The Great Kapok tree and learnt a little about Sir David Attenborough.
Take a look at the brilliant masks our Year 3 children created. The children had a great time designing and creating Maya death masks to kick start their new topic: Locating the Maya!
Year 4 are also discovering many fascinating facts about the Maya. They enjoyed creating their masks before showing great teamwork and problem-solving when tackling a maths challenge to build a temple from cubes.
Year 5 got straight into learning about ‘Animals vs Humans’ and built their own working models of a beating heart. They used straws, food colouring, water and plastic bottles to represent the atrium, ventricle and body. The children used scientific vocabulary and managed to make the water flow from bottle to bottle - representing the blood flowing from our hearts to our bodies!
Year 6 have been out exploring Jorvik Viking Centre and DIG - An Archaeological Adventure in York today - rounding off last term’s topic on Saxon & Viking Settlements. In the week before Easter, the children had an action-packed Maths Engage Week in conjunction with The Place - York. Highlights of the week included sessions with:
Bettys: Exploring how maths is essential to every corner of their business.
University of York: Taking complex puzzles and sharpening our geometry skills by drawing detailed scale drawings during our campus visit.
Nestlé: Deep-diving into packaging and measurement taught us importance of precision for large-scale manufacturing.
Richard Shephard Music Foundation: Compose unique beats using rhythmic fractions in music workshops.
They had an incredible week. Many thanks to the partners who supported the experiences.
Not bad to say we've only been back three days! And there's plenty more still to look forward to...
