In line with the Department for Education’s vision for Primary PE and the Sport Premium the PE curriculum and extra-curricular activities have been designed to ensure that:
‘All pupils leave physically literate and with the knowledge and skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport’
The school also runs a wide variety of lunch and after school clubs, some of which are led by coaches and some by staff from Westfield and York High. These include football, athletics, gymnastics, hockey, running (Golden Mile), netball, non-contact boxing, dance and sports hall athletics.
We are part of the York Sports Partnership and as a result we participate in many sporting competitions including hockey, multi-skills, gymnastics, football, netball, golf, cross country, rounders, cricket, athletics, sports hall athletics and rugby. We believe in healthy competition teaching the children to do their best and be gracious in victory and defeat. We have had some great success, including reaching the Yorkshire Finals in Tag Rugby, the North Yorkshire Games in football (boys and girls), tag rugby and athletics.
*Please see the attached calendar for details of the YSSN competitions (please note the venues have been removed so please contact the school if you require additional details)
The Government announced that from September 2013 schools will receive an additional £8,000 (plus £5 per pupil between the ages of 5-11 years old) to improve the quality of sport and PE for all their children.
We have decided to invest the majority of our funding in developing participation in school sport and in the professional development of teachers at our school so they are best equipped to teach high quality Physical Education and school sport for years to come. In order to achieve these aims a large proportion of this has been invested in the York School Sport Partnership which provides us with:
A PE specialist for 3 half-terms per year
The PE specialist’s duties include:
- Running a lunch club to engage and inspire the children;
- Team teaching PE with staff to enhance CPD opportunities;
- Running an after school club to engage and inspire the children.
Access to other specialist coaching
In addition to the above and as part of the membership we have had Athletics, Cricket, Football and Rugby coaches. These have been used to team-teach lessons to help with staff development.
We have access to various Level 2 (inter-school) competitions which are organised by Andy Pope. Through these competitions we have the chance to qualify for Level 3 (County-level) competitions.
In addition to this we have paid for a membership with the Youth Sports Trust (http://www.youthsporttrust.org/) which provides us with extra CPD opportunities, both in the delivery and leadership of PE.
For a breakdown of exactly how the Sports Premium will be spent, please see the attached finance report.
